Intro to “Swimming In the Pool of Life”

I’m preparing to post a personal literary essay I wrote last year. Its setting is from when I was on the swim team in high school, complete with all the attendant angst, insecurities, and uncertainties about the future that every teen faces. Its theme is the value of extra-curricular activities for young people in the development of their character.

It draws not only from my life experience, but also from a classic shape poem called “400-Meter Free Style” by Maxine Kumin. I used several of my favorite literary devices: imagery, metaphors, descriptive writing, varied pacing accomplished through sentence length and word choice, and subtly alternating tenses.

The moral? There will be a reward at the end of all your hard work and perseverance.

I hope you like it. Leave me a comment and let me know what you think! Thanks!
